Campbell Mattinson specialises in Editorial Portrait & Video Work.

He is a journalist and novelist by trade, and has worked full-time in the media since the late 1980s. His photography and his journalism grow from the same place: a need to capture people and places, at heart, in essence.

As a photo-journalist he was named Australian Young Writer of the Year by The Monthly in 1995, and won the Best Australian Sports Writing Award in 1996. He is the author of the award-winning book The Wine Hunter, and of the best-selling novel We Were Not Men (Fourth Estate, 2021). In 2026, three of his images were shortlisted in the World Food Photography Awards. In 2020, as writer/director, he won the Best Film Award in the Regional category at the St Kilda Film Festival.

He is the former editor of Halliday Magazine, the former Chief Editor of the Halliday Wine Companion, and the only person to have won the Australian Wine Communicator of the Year Award more than once. In 2002 he was featured in the Best Australian Short Story: 10-Year Collection. He’s had five books published commercially in Australia (1 x Hachette, 3 x Hardie Grant, 1 x Fourth Estate), and another in the US (Sterling).

He published his first image, in a newspaper, in 1987. He published dozens of images in newspapers in the 1990s and beyond. He only officially started calling himself a photo-journalist from about 2016 onwards. He is known as a writer who loves photography. He is immersed in both.
