Campbell Mattinson is a writer who photographs.

He is a journalist and novelist by trade, and has worked full-time in the media since the late 1980s.

As a photo-journalist he was named Australian Young Writer of the Year by The IndependentMonthly in 1995, and won the Best Australian Sports Writing Award in 1996. He is the author of the award-winning book The Wine Hunter and the best-selling novel We Were Not Men (Fourth Estate, 2021).

He is the former editor of Halliday Magazine and former Chief Editor of the Halliday Wine Companion, and the only person to have won the Australian Wine Communicator of the Year Award twice.

In 2020, as writer/director, he won the Best Film Award in the Regional category at the St Kilda Film Festival.

His photography grows from the same instinct for people and place. He makes portraits – of winemakers, of makers, of the people and landscapes he writes about – and authored photo essays that carry a story across a sequence of frames. In 2026, three of his images were shortlisted in the World Food Photography Awards.
