Your family slides, made into a book.

Most family slides haven't been properly seen in decades. They live in boxes and carousels, viewed – if at all – by holding them up to a window. The images deserve better, and the technology now exists to give it to them.

I scan 35mm slides (mounted) at high resolution using professional camera-scanning equipment, retouch and colour-correct each selected image, then design and produce a printed photobook – sequenced with an editor's eye (I’ve worked in the media for 30 years), and print the resultant book to archival standard.

About

My parents never had a wedding book. I scanned all their old slides into top quality files, and produced the wedding book they never had. This book included images from their early-1960s wedding, and also of the first years of marriage and family life that followed. Sixty years on, images that had only ever been held up to a window, were finally able to be viewed properly – over and over. This is a guesstimate only but I would say that my parents have viewed this slides-made-into-a-book roughly six million times in the past 12 months.

That's the standard every project here is held to.

This is not a bulk-scanning service. Plenty of those exist. This is a publishing service: my goal is to create a book that your family will hand around for the next fifty years.

The Process

  • Geometric circles, overlapping, representing the meeting of minds.

    1. Consultation

We talk about the collection – how many slides, their condition, what the book is for.

  • Geometric drawing of two individuals meeting to exchange physical film slides.

    2. Delivery

You deliver your slides to me [in person in Melbourne / by insured courier – confirm]. They're handled carefully and returned with the finished book.

  • Geometric drawing of aa camera lens hovering directly above a mounted film slide.

    3. Scanning

Every slide in scope is photographed at high resolution.

  • Geometric drawing of a slide scan being placed onto a gridded page layout.

    4. Curation

I select and sequence the strongest images – the editorial step that makes a book rather than an album. You approve the selection before printing.

  • Line drawing of a magnifying glass hovering over a book page.

    5. Basic Retouching

Dust, scratches, colour fade and cast are assessed and, where necessary, corrected in Lightroom and Photoshop. The character of the film and maintained.

  • Line drawing of an open book spread.

    6. Design & Print

The book is designed and printed at 21cm x 21cm / in a size to suit – to a high standard. You also receive the full set of digital files.

WHAT SETS US APART

The images have been in the cupboard for too long. It’s time to bring them out and have them permanently on the coffee table.

Pricing

Projects are quoted individually, based on the number of slides and the scope of the book. As a guide, a typical project – [e.g. up to 300 slides scanned, roughly 60–80 images selected for a 30cm x 30cm hardcover book] – starts from $1500, including one copy of the book and all digital files. Additional copies of the book at cost plus 25%
