Beautiful video is a beautiful thing.

I love photography. I always – unless it’s specifically requested that I don’t – take photographs, even on video shoots. But video portraits are vastly under-utilised and (arguably) have the greater long-term value.

Campbell Mattinson is a Melbourne photographer based in the city's western suburbs. His ongoing series Real Estate Novelist documents the houses, cars and people of Melbourne's suburbs – the pink houses, the parked Beetles, the ordinary streets seen in a light that is often stark, bright and beautiful. A journalist and novelist by trade, he photographs the way he writes: looking for the story, the light, the essence. He also shoots portraits, winemakers and wine regions.
