Alkina Vineyard, Barossa Valley

Winemaker Amelia Nolan, marketing manager Dan Coward, and wine writer Dave Brookes walk through the Alkina Wine Estate vineyard at Greenock in the Barossa Valley.

Over the past decade Alkina Wine Estate has been one of the great quality stories of Australian wine. It’s taken a prime vineyard at Greenock in the Barossa Valley and dissected it, inch by inch, soil grain by soil grain, and turned this knowledge into a series of micro-site-grown wines that sit among Australia’s best.

When I visited though, I didn’t know this. It was nearly dinner time, and I was hungry. It had been a long day, and a long few days. I had my camera in one hand, and a beer in the other. I hadn’t yet tasted any of the Alkina wines when I snapped the above, but once I had sat down and tasted through the Alkina wares – I wanted to run back out there to those vines and to that gentle roll of land and into the fall of last light to re-experience the magic of where those beautiful wines had grown.
